The four central squares (d4, d5, e4, e5) are the most important area on the chessboard.
Controlling the center gives you:
- Maximum piece mobility
- Ability to attack both flanks
- Restriction of your opponent's piece activity
You can control the center either by occupying it with pawns or exerting influence with pieces.
1.e4 2.d4 — White occupies two of the four central squares with pawns.
Find the best move on the board
1.a3 2.h3 — A poor opening that ignores the center and only moves wing pawns.
